What a match it was! Such a final proves that cricket is indeed an unpredictable game. With South Africa needing 30 runs from 30 balls, India secured victory by 7 runs and won the T20 World CUP. What a performance by the Indian team! The great Team India, and of course, Rohit Sharma & Coach Rahul Dravid.
Match Highlights
Rohit won the toss and chose to bat. In the first over, Kohli hit three fours off Marco Jansen, showing everyone that the king is back in form.
In the very next over, Rohit started in his usual style by hitting two fours off Keshav Maharaj, taking India’s score to 23 runs in just 8 balls. However, while attempting a sweep, he was caught by Klaasen and returned to the dugout. On the last ball of the 2nd over, Rishabh Pant was also out, LBW, while trying to play a sweep shot. Keshav Maharaj gave South Africa two breakthroughs. India was at 23 runs for 2 wickets in 2 overs. Even Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t shine today, as he was dismissed by Rabada for just 3 runs. India’s situation became 34 runs for 3 wickets.
But once again, Kohli took responsibility on his shoulders and stood firm against South Africa like a warrior. Axar Patel gave him valuable support.
Axar and Virat’s partnership saved India, with both playing brilliantly. Their 72-run stand helped India cross 100 runs after being 34-3. Axar, as an all-rounder, played an outstanding innings. After the early loss of three wickets in the powerplay, Patel counter-attacked aggressively, hitting sixes against Aiden Markram and Tabraiz Shamsi. Axar was run out for 47, and India lost their 4th wicket at 106.
Shivam Dube also supported Virat, contributing to a 57-run partnership. Kohli completed his half-century in the 17th over, marking his first half-century of the World Cup.
In the 18th over, Kohli scored 14 runs off Rabada’s bowling, following Rabada’s earlier over where he conceded 16 runs, helping India reach a total of 150 runs. In the 19th over, Virat added 12 runs against Jansen, including a four and a six. However, Kohli was dismissed on a slower short ball after making 76 runs off 59 balls. This was a notable performance by Kohli, highlighting his significant contribution. In that same over, Jansen conceded 17 runs, bringing India’s score to 167/5 after the 19th over. India’s innings ended with a total of 176/7 runs after scoring 9 runs in the 20th over.
South Africa Chasing 177-
South Africa also had a rough start at 13/2, with Hendrick and Markram getting out early. However, De Kock and Stubbs formed a 58-run partnership. Axar bowled out Stubbs, and then the main drama began. Klassen displayed exceptional skill as Class of Klassen and almost took the match away from India. In the 15th over, Klassen hit Axar for 2 fours and 2 sixes, scoring 24 runs in that over, bringing South Africa’s total to 147/4.
Drama of the match
With 30 runs needed from 30 balls, it seemed like the match was out of India’s hands. But in a cinematic turn of events, hero Bumrah entered the attack and changed the situation by giving away only 4 runs in his over, altering the course of the game.
The second hero of the World Cup, Hardik, came into the attack and got Klassen out on the very first ball of the 16th over. Indians were on their feet, sensing a chance to turn the game in their favour.
Klassen had played well, scoring 52 off 27 balls with 5 sixes and 2 fours. In this over, Hardik conceded only 4 runs, putting South Africa under pressure with 22 runs needed from 18 balls, compared to the earlier 30 runs from 30 balls.
Climax of the World Cup
Bumrah started the 18th over dramatically by taking Jansen’s wicket for just 2 runs, once again showing South Africa’s tendency to choke under pressure. By the end of Bumrah’s over, South Africa needed 20 runs from 12 balls. In the 19th over, Arshdeep did a fantastic job, preventing any boundaries or sixes and giving away only 4 runs. He finished his spell with figures of 4 overs, 20 runs, and 2 wickets.
The climax felt like the world had stopped. South Africa needed 16 runs from 6 balls. The pivotal moment came when Suryakumar Yadav made an incredible catch. 140 crore Indians danced on their feet, feeling the joy and certainty that the World Cup was definitely coming to India from Barbados.
In Hardik Pandya’s last over, South Africa couldn’t achieve the 16 runs they needed, making India the T20 World Cup champions of 2024.
This is exactly how a final match should be! India Won the T20 World Cup now the world champion of T20 cricket!
Rohit Sharma – Today’s victory is not just about our performance now, but about the hard work of the past few years. We’ve faced high-pressure situations before, sometimes not ending well, but today showed how we rally together when pushed against the wall. As a team, we wanted this win badly, and we put in a lot of effort both on and off the field. I’m proud of our boys and the management for trusting us and allowing us to play freely.
Rohit and Virat, thank you so much for your long-standing service to the nation and for bringing home the World Cup for India. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Celebration of Rahul Dravid
In a rare moment of joyous abandon, Rahul Dravid celebrated wildly, lifting the World Cup in exhilarating fashion, breaking away from his usual reserved demeanour. I don’t seek redemption; as a player, I gave my best but never won a trophy. Winning the World Cup was emotional; I’m usually not speechless, but today I am. I’m incredibly proud of our victory and how we fought through.” Rahul David Said.
